Great Meadows Foundation is pleased to announce that Miami based independent curator and researcher Natalia Zuluaga will be the Great Meadows Foundation’s 2019 Critic-in-Residence, and will be based in the region from February 1 until March 30, 2019. Now in its second year, the Critic-in-Residence program is a collaboration between Great Meadows Foundation and INhouse, and brings a noted contemporary art curator/critic to Kentucky once a year for a two month period to engage with the contemporary art scene in the state.
Noting that this unique residency is “a rare but appreciated opportunity to immerse oneself and engage with a new artistic community for an extended period of time,” Natalia Zuluaga says she looks forward “to the surprises and meaningful encounters that will surely emerge over the course of my two months as a critic-in-residence in Kentucky.”
The goal of the residency is to help strengthen and support the growth of Kentucky artists’ work and their engagement with the larger art world, as well as raising awareness of the Kentucky art scene with professionals in other parts of the country. “Visiting artists in their studios and paying critical attention to and participating in the visual art scene in Kentucky, Natalia will bring a fresh energy to our community of artists,” says Al Shands, founder of GMF. “Her broad knowledge and experience as a contemporary art curator and writer will prove of lasting benefit to artists across the state.”
About Natalia Zuluaga
After majoring in journalism at the University of Central Florida, Zuluaga studied photography, receiving an MFA from Florida International University in 2007. In 2015 she graduated with an MA in Curatorial Studies, from the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY.
Between 2007 and 2012 Natalia Zuluaga was the manager of foundation programs at CIFO (Cisneros Fontanais Art Foundation) where she managed the foundation’s core programs, and from 2016 through 2018 she was Artistic Director of the ArtCenter/South Florida, where she developed exhibitions, residency programs, artist development initiatives, and adult education programs. Since 2014 she has been the co-director of [NAME] Publications, a non-profit press and cultural office, and most recently she launched and is the co-editor of the bilingual online journal Dispatches (www.dispatchesjournal.org).
Natalia is currently organizing the LatinX Art Sessions, a two day program co-presented by ArtCenter/South Florida and Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), which will explore Latinx identity in contemporary art. In 2018 she co-curated SupraCitizenship: Future of Demonstration, a two day public performance, panel discussion and televised broadcast held in Vienna, Austria.
Recent and exhibitions have included A.S.T: Intertidal (curator) at ArtCenter/South Florida in Miami; Art in Public Life (in collaboration with the Environmental and Sustainability Department at the City of Miami Beach); The Recalibrated Institution (co-organized with Victoria Ivanova and Armen Avanessian); Parallax Drift: The Program for Applied Artistic Research (curator); and AN IMAGE (co-curated with Domingo Castillo). Zuluaga has been a visiting professor at the Pacific Northwest College of Art (Portland) and at Florida International University (Miami), and has lectured at various institutions including The New Museum (New York), Kadist Foundation (Paris), Pérez Art Museum Miami, Es Baluard, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Palma, Spain), among others.
